The history of AI SEO courses follows the history of generative answers in search. Training in the subject appeared as Google, OpenAI and others moved part of the answer to a search from a list of links into generated text, beginning with Google's Search Generative Experience in May 2023; the name generative engine optimization was formalized in a research paper in November 2023.[3][4] Most course pages in the category do not state a launch date, so this article dates the systems the courses teach and the programs whose pages carry dates.

When did AI SEO courses start?

Training in the subject followed generative answers into search: Google's Search Generative Experience began in May 2023, the term GEO was formalized in November 2023, and AI Overviews reached all users in the United States in May 2024. Most course pages do not state launch dates, so the timeline dates the systems and the programs that do.[3][4][5]

Dated events. Launch dates of individual courses are included only where the provider's page states them.

What came before AI SEO courses?

Retrieval-augmented generation, described in a 2020 paper, supplied the architecture most answer engines use, and Google's December 2022 addition of Experience to E-A-T supplied a concept later taught in AI SEO curricula as a basis for being chosen as a cited source.[1][2]

The technical basis of answer engines predates the courses by several years. Retrieval-augmented generation, in which a language model answers from documents retrieved from an index, was described in a paper first posted in May 2020.[1] Google's addition of Experience to its E-A-T concept in December 2022 later became a staple of AI SEO curricula as a basis for being chosen as a source.[2]

Where do the names GEO and AEO come from?

GEO was formalized in a November 2023 research paper that reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generated responses. AEO came into commercial use as a course and certification name, and HubSpot adopted it for the certifications that replaced its SEO certification in June 2026.[4][11]

The paper that formalized generative engine optimization in November 2023 introduced a benchmark of queries and reported that optimization could raise visibility in generated responses by up to 40%, with effects that varied by domain.[4] Answer engine optimization came into wide commercial use as a course and certification name; HubSpot adopted it for the certifications that replaced its SEO certification in June 2026.[11] The terms are compared in the AI SEO course glossary.

Who publishes AI SEO courses?

Mostly SEO and marketing software companies, among them HubSpot, Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Conductor, Georion and Yoast, alongside Coursera and Udemy, training companies, independent instructors and Skool communities. Vendor courses are usually free and often teach with the vendor's own tools.[14]

SEO and marketing software companies became the largest publishers of free AI SEO courses. By September 2026 HubSpot, Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Conductor, Georion and Yoast all offered courses, several of them teaching with their own tools, while Coursera and Udemy hosted courses by independent instructors and training companies.[11][15][16][17] These are compared in free AI SEO courses.

Which written guides shaped AI SEO courses?

Two free guides: Aleyda Solis's Learning AI Search roadmap, launched in July 2025 and at version 4 by March 2026, and iPullRank's 24-chapter AI Search Manual, which added four chapters in February 2026. Charles Floate calls the manual the best free education in the category.[9][10][13]
